A Letter From the Concerned Citizens of Poland
 
Dear Professor Krugman,
 
It is with great interest that we have read your article Poland is Not Yet Lost. We are deeply interested in all kinds of information associated with the Euro’s current and future status, as we are still pondering the basic question whether adopting the Euro will prove to be beneficial to us, as both Polish and European Citizens. One thing is for certain - we lack the necessary knowledge to make an informed decision.
 
We would like you to know, however, that our ideals are deeply rooted in the Polish democratic tradition, so very reminiscent of the views held by many Americans. We strongly believe that it is the citizens who should take action once government fails to fulfill its basic duties.
 
We hold unwavering pride in our country's freedom, despite the government's, and its subordinate bureaucracy's, often imprudent decisions which, at times, lead us to question the true extent of the said freedom. 
 
We strongly believe in the wisdom of these words:
„We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
 
That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
 
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes.”
 
Therefore, we believe that you could be interested in the fact that we have started rallying support, which includes gathering the necessary signatures, for holding a nationwide referendum in which the people would be given chance to voice their opinion on adopting the Euro. This decision is much too serious, and its consequences too far-reaching, to be left up to politicians.
