Unrefined salt


The problem is not the amount of salt you eat, but the type of salt you eat, explains Dr. David Brownstein, author of Salt Your Way To Health and director of the Center for Holistic Medicine clinic in the US city of Michigan. Most people buy refined salt that is devoid of almost all of the beneficial minerals. Table salt contains mainly sodium and chlorine and a small amount of iodine to prevent the formation of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland).


Dr. Brownstein argues that, for comparison, unrefined salt contains about 80 different trace minerals, allowing you to balance the functioning of the glands, cleanse the body of toxins, raise the pH level (i.e. change from acid to more alkaline), improve lipid metabolism, reduce blood pressure and insulin levels and prevent muscle pain and cramps.


How to recognize unrefined salt? It is definitely not just sea salt, which you can get in every better-stocked store today. Many producers of refined salt include this description on the label, but it is deceptive because all the salt on earth originated in the sea.


Unrefined salt contains these 80 minerals, so this information should be on the label. These minerals give it a characteristic color, clearly different from plain white table salt. Some varieties turn grayish in color, others are reddish depending on the specific composition. Unrefined salt is always coarse-grained, so it cannot be poured out of the salt shaker.


If mankind could limit salt intake to the recommended level, there would be 14% fewer deaths from stroke and 9% fewer deaths from ischemic heart disease among hypertensive patients (6% and 4% in patients with normal blood pressure, respectively) . This means that the number of deaths from heart disease worldwide would fall by 2.6 million1.


According to the international lobbying organization World Action on Salt and Health (WASH), which brings together experts from around the world, the amount of sodium chloride we consume has the greatest impact on blood pressure, clearly exceeding factors such as physical activity or a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.


The British pro-health group Public Health England is equally strong in its views. In a recent report on salt in the diet, its representatives announced that "there is an undeniable relationship between the amount of salt consumed in the diet and the risk of developing high blood pressure."
