Humanum genus - encyclical of Pope Leo XIII on Freemasonry of April 20, 1884 [1].

The aim of the document was to indicate the dangers for Christianity and the Catholic Church resulting from the ideas and activities of Freemasonry. The Pope defined her as one of the most important enemies of Christianity and the Church. He referred in this respect to the documents and statements of earlier popes, beginning with the bull of Clement XII of 1738. Nevertheless, as Leo XIII noted, the development of freemasonry in the nineteenth century progressed and gained a great influence on governments. The Pope made the fundamental accusations against Freemasons:

    rejection of religious principles, spreading rationalist, secular and naturalistic ideology.
    undermining Catholic truths of faith, criticizing the authority and teaching authority of the Church, and spreading religious indifferentism.
    Striving to separate religion from state and social life. The state is to be non-denominational.
    By influencing the state authorities, limiting the right of the clergy, confiscating church property, liquidating religious orders. Bringing the liquidation of the Papal States in Italy and striving to liquidate the papacy
    Limiting the influence of religion and the Church in education and culture. Promotion of secular morality in accordance with "nature" and "liberated", which results in man's animosity, spreading bad morals, sexual promiscuity, sanctioning divorce, collapse of the institution of marriage, with particular harm to women and children.
    In political matters, the promotion of a system based on freedom and equality of people and the origin of power from the people, which stimulates disobedience to legal power, leads to a revolution and, consequently, contributes to the development of ideologies aiming at the elimination of private property and social and property differences. Freemasonry is linked by a commonality of goals with socialism and communism.
    Relying on the principle of strict secrecy and oath, which makes Freemasonry a secret relationship, hides its goals, organization and methods of operation from society, and allows members to be forced to carry out even unethical orders.
    Freemasonry conducts two-faced activities, openly presents itself as an organization that promotes science, progress, and humanitarianism, secretly acts against the state and social order, for which - according to the Pope - the only reliable support are Christian values.

As a countermeasure against Freemasonry, the Pope recommended that the clergy and secular Catholics disclose its true program and methods of operation, make the faithful aware of threats and strengthen Catholic principles in them, especially among young people. He considered it particularly important to spread the movements of lay Catholics and mentioned the Third Order of St. Francis (tertiaries), craft guilds and workers' associations of a religious nature, as well as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. It banned membership and support for Freemasonry and upheld the penalties imposed by earlier popes.
