Renault-Nissan produces batteries in Portugal
The auto alliance Renault-Nissan will start in 2010 with the construction of a battery factory in the city of Aveiro. The opening of the facility scheduled for 2012. In the factory are up to 50,000 batteries per year are produced for electric cars. The batteries are used exclusively in the electric cars of the two car manufacturers and will not be sold to competitors. At the end of 2010 will come with the Nissan Leaf’s first electric car model of the Japanese group on the car market.
According to current plans to the Nissan Leaf first on the Japanese market to be available later and a year later in Europe. A problem in the production of the batteries is likely that only limited resources are the rare commodity lithium. In the next few years, demand for lithium exceed supply and lead to high prices on the batteries. The research departments of car manufacturers will work but because the amount of the lithium per battery limit without reducing the range. The less a lithium battery has the more expensive it could be in production.
Increasing lithium-expected price
The price of this rare commodity lithium could soon rise sharply as demand increased due to the onset of global electric car boom, and thus the battery is more expensive. Currently, a lithium-ion battery costs depending on the power about 5,000 to 20,000 euros and is the main reason why electric cars are so expensive. The countries of Bolivia, Chile, USA, Argentina, Canada, Australia, China and Zimbabwe are among the largest lithium reserves and although mainly in salt lakes.
The extraction of important raw material is expensive but for the commodity groups due to the rising price soon but lucrative and a billion dollar business. If the proportion of lithium batteries could be reduced, then it would be possible that the electric cars are not as expensive as at present. While there are alternatives such as lead batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries or nickel-metal hydride batteries, but are not as powerful as lithium ion batteries. It will take some time until the lithium batteries are cheaper in the course of their technological development.
Battery for Chevrolet Volt will be produced
The first lithium-ion batteries for the Chevrolet Volt electric car was produced at the plant Brownstone of nationalized U.S. car company General Motors last Thursday. The new facilities built within a period of five months and is a subsidiary of GM Manufacturing subsystem. Already this spring, the batteries should be transported to Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility where the Chevrolet Volt is made.
The investment for the production of electric cars will amount to around 700 million U.S. dollars and are made in 8 locations. At the end of 2011, the Chevrolet Volt be available in Germany as Opel Ampera. The range of amounts in the pure electric drive only 60 km but with the selectable 1.4-liter gasoline engine can be driven up to 500 kilometers. The petrol engine generates while driving new energy for the electric motor so that the battery is recharged. At what price of the Chevrolet Volt is offered is not yet known.
Battery prices too high
According to the U.S. battery manufacturer Johnson Controls Power Solutions to the newspaper "Die Welt" it will take 10 to 15 years before electric cars will prevail. The battery prices are still too high for an early breakthrough of electric cars to reach the marketplace. The battery industry is striving for a price of 350 euros per kilowatt hour while he was still amounts to more than 700 euros. In 2020, there will be 250 euros per kilowatt hour.
The Johnson-Chief Alex Molinaroli sees Germany not as a driver for electric vehicles but settled on the German car market with a rather slow establishment of electric cars. Instead, he estimated that France could play a leading role, as the French government had started corresponding electric mobility projects, for example, with Renault. The U.S. company Johnson Controls is with its subsidiary, Power Solutions and the dominant brand Varta the battery manufacturers. At the beginning of 2008, the group in France had built up a first production facility for lithium-ion batteries and opened.
