W kontekście pogarszającej się sytuacji na Białorusi w ubiegłym tygodniu zaproponowałem przyjęcie przez delegację Parlamentu Europejskiego do spraw stosunków z Białorusią wspólnego oświadczenia potępiającego ostatnie wydarzenia. W dniu dzisiejszym odbyło się nadzwyczajne posiedzenie delegacji, na które przybyć miał Aleś Michalewicz. Ze względu jednak na skomplikowane procedury wydawania dokumentów podróży przez czeskie Ministerstwo Spraw Wewnętrznych, nie mógł on otrzymać paszportu na czas. Największym jednak i bardzo przykrym zaskoczeniem było aresztowanie Andrzeja Poczobuta, z którym przeprowadzić mieliśmy videorozmowę. Został on zatrzymany w drodze do Mińska, skąd miało odbyć się połączenie z nami, podczas którego mieliśmy wysłuchać relacji o represjach wobec opozycji. W tej sytuacji zdecydowaliśmy o wydaniu oświadczenia potępiającego prześladowanie Andrzeja Poczobuta. Pod spodem zamieszczam jego treść.
DELEGATION FOR RELATIONS WITH BELARUS
STATEMENT
Brussels, 7 April 2011.The Delegation condemns the actions of the Belarusian authorities that resulted in preventing Mr Poczobut from participating in a video-conference with the EP Delegation for Relations with Belarus. Mr Poczobut was supposed to share with us his personal experience, as well as that of other journalists, in connection with the authorities' clampdown on independent media. Just before his departure to the EU Delegation to Belarus in Minsk he was detained.
Mr Andrzej Poczobut, a correspondent for the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, is accused of an alleged public insult of the Head of State of Belarus, Mr Aleksandr Lukashenka, in his articles in Polish and Belarusian media and faces criminal charges instituted against him under Article 368 of the Criminal Code.
The Delegation believes that this case is the latest proof of human rights violations in Belarus exercised by the authorities in the aftermath of the presidential elections on 19 December 2010. The Delegation strongly condemns all kinds of repression such as harassment, arrests and intimidation of the Belarusian civil society as well as the violations of the fundamental human rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of media. These violations severely undermine the basic principles of a democratic state. In particular, the European Parliament Delegation calls upon the Belarusian authorities to put an end to prosecution of journalists for slander and on other politically-motivated charges.
The Delegation calls upon the Aleksandr Lukashenka’s regime to stop the persecution, listen to the demands of the Belarusian society, ideas of the opposition and to resume a national public debate on the future of the country and its democratization. The current conduct of the Belarusian authorities is unacceptable.
