The Gaza protest flotilla changed course to gain distance from the Israeli navy boats which had hailed them, demanded they identify themselves and warned them they would not be allowed to reach Gaza, an Al-Jazeera reporter with the flotilla said just past midnight on Monday.

According to the report, the flotilla organizers wish any confrontation to occur during daylight hours rather than in the dark.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Israeli consulate in Istanbul to protest "the harassmant of the Gaza 'freedom' flotilla," Israel Radio reported late Sunday overnight.

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish police blocked dozens of stone-throwing protesters who tried to storm the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul over reports of an Israeli attack on at least one of the “Free Gaza” ships in international waters on Monday, news channels reported.

Northern District police chief Cmdr. Shimon Koren completed an evaluation of the security situation in the North on Monday morning following reports of deadly clashes between Navy commandos and members of a Turkish flotilla bound for Gaza.

Koren  ordered a high state of alert and instructed police officers to be ready "for the possibility of any scenario or attempt to cause a disturbance."

He called for restraint in the northern district, home to a large number of Arab Israelis.
