Szanowny Panie,

pozdrawiam,PiotrS

Dear Professor XXX, Thank you for your information about the 38th Poznań Linguistic Meeting (PLM2007); the Poznań Meetings have indeed become an important and inspiring event in the calendar of every linguist. However,  I should like to inform you that, with the support of several other Swiss academics, I have launched an e-mail campaign to boycott Poland because of that country's continuing discrimination of gay and lesbian people (please see below).  I know, of course, that neither you personally nor your academic colleagues in Poland can be held responsible for your government's actions and that is why I am also copying this email to the Polish Embassy in Berne; however, what I think Polish academics can do is make these issues of discrimination public and thus put enough pressure onto the Polish government to abandon its policies of discrimination and unequal treatment of a large section of society.

Yours sincerely,

----------

Dear liberally-minded friends and colleagues, The position of Polish gays and lesbians has become increasingly difficult since the Kaczynski twins from the ultra-conservative "Law and Justice Party" have come to power in October 2005. Government sanctioned homophopia has now led to the formal proposal of a bill that would not only make it illegal to discuss homosexuality in all Polish educational institutions (cf. the infamous UK Clause 28, 1988-2000) but would also lead to the actual dismissal (!) of openly gay teachers. As the Dutch MEP Kathalijne Buitenweg put it: "It is shocking that the government of a modern European country would even consider such draconian legislation. The promotion of gay hatred is the antithesis of EU anti-discrimination rules and the Polish government must publicly reject this approach."   However, the Polish hate agenda doesn't stop at its borders. In a recent meeting of EU education ministers in Heidelberg, Roman Giertych, the Polish Minister of Education, called on Europe as a whole to follow Poland's example and "limit homosexual propaganda to protect children against wrong perception of a family"; for otherwise, he said, we would "become a continent settled by caring for families members [sic.] of the Muslim world."  I therefore strongly urge you to boycott Poland, especially also conferences in and academic exchanges with Poland, until the Polish government commits itself to the most basic and fundamental human rights of freedom, equality and non-discrimination -- rights that we all thought could be taken for granted in Europe in 2007.

 Thank you!

Prof. J. R. Schwyter
