Misja w Afganistanie, szkolenie wojsk na jej potrzeby i wpływ doświadczeń z operacji na rozwój polskich sił zbrojnych – to niektóre tematy poruszone w środę w Warszawie przez prezydenta Lecha Kaczyńskiego i dowódcę sił amerykańskich na Bliskim Wschodzie i w Azji Środkowej gen. Davida Petraeusa. L. Kaczyński odznaczył amerykańskiego dowódcę Krzyżem Komandorskim Orderu Zasługi RP.
Za współdziałanie z dziesiątą, ostatnią zmianą polskiego kontyngentu w Iraku, Petraeus, dowodzący całą iracką operacją, otrzymał Gwiazdę Iraku.
– Dzisiejszy świat potrzebuje wiedzy, wiedzy dla sukcesu i pan generał jest tego znakomitym przykładem – zaznaczył L. Kaczyński. Zdaniem prezydenta Petraeus pokazał, że „wiedza, mądrze stworzona doktryna mogą być skuteczne nie tylko jako błyskotliwe konstrukcje intelektualne, ale także w rzeczywistości”. – Za to wszystko dziękujemy, za to są te odznaczenia – powiedział.
– To wyjątkowy zaszczyt, mogę go przyjąć wyłącznie w imieniu setek tysięcy, z którymi miałem zaszczyt służyć w ostatnich latach – powiedział Petraeus, przypominając, że współdziałał z polskim wojskiem nie tylko w Afganistanie i Iraku, ale i w Bośni. – Staraliśmy się być dobrym partnerem dla Polski, a Polska z pewnością była wspaniałym partnerem dla Stanów Zjednoczonych i dla wszystkich narodów NATO – dodał. – Doceniamy pańskie silne i zdeterminowane przywództwo jako zwierzchnika polskich sił zbrojnych – zwrócił się do prezydenta.
Szef kancelarii prezydenta Władysław Stasiak, który jako szef BBN poznał Petraeusa przed dwoma laty, podkreślił jego ogromne doświadczenie, bardzo ciekawy przebieg kariery wojskowej i dorobek naukowy, w tym doktorat ze stosunków międzynarodowych.
Gen. Petraeus rozmawiał także z szefem Sztabu Generalnego Wojska Polskiego gen. Franciszkiem Gągorem.
Na krótkim spotkaniu z dziennikarzami w SGWP Petraeus potwierdził, że za kilka miesięcy polskich wojskowych w prowincji Ghazni wspierać będzie amerykański batalion (liczący od 800 do 1000 żołnierzy) ze 101 dywizji powietrzno-desantowej.
Gen. David Petraeus od października 2008 jest dowódcą amerykańskiego Dowództwa centralnego – CENTCOM, któremu podlegają Bliski Wschód i Azja Środkowa. Przedtem przez 19 miesięcy dowodził wielonarodowymi wojskami w Iraku. Jego strategia dla ogarniętego walkami powstańczymi i wojną domową kraju zakładała zwiększenie sił amerykańskich, a zarazem porozumienie z sunnickimi przywódcami, którzy zaczęli zwalczać Al Kaidę.
