Rollin’ and Tumblin’ to jeszcze jeden z tych bluesów, których autorem jest zbiorowość bluesmanów z Delty Mississippi. Nic obecnie nie wiadomo o początkach tego utworu. Sądzę, że nie jest to blues „programowy”, niosący tęsknoty i pragnienia zbieraczy bawełny, jak np. Catfish Blues (patrz notka:catfish blues). Jego żywy rytm i melodia wskazują raczej na to, że Rollin’ & Tumblin’ powstał i ewoluował przy tańcach i zabawach w juke jointach.
Ponieważ blues nie miał autora, każdy kto go nagrał przypisywał sobie jego autorstwo. Powstała olbrzymia ilość tekstów, tak więc w tym kontekście każdy tekściarz czuł się jego twórcą.
Najwcześniejsze nagranie miało miejsce w wytwórni Victor w 1928 roku. Dokonał go zespół Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, grający w składzie: Gus Cannon (banjo i jug), Ashley Thompson (śpiew) i Noah Lewis (organki). Podaję skład tego blues bandu, gdyż zachowane nagranie jest wyjątkowe dobre jak na tamte czasy. Tytuł tej pierwszej wersji to: Minglewood blues. Minglewood było miejscem urodzin Noaha Lewisa. Był tam też bardzo duży levee camp, obozowisko robotników pracujących przy budowie wałów przeciwpowodziowych. Na tyle duży, że muzycy bluesowi mogli tam nieźle zarobić. Gus Cannon’s Jug Stompers to najstarszy jug z Memphis, starszy niż legendarny Memphis Jug Band.
W 1929 roku nastąpiło drugie nagranie w wytwórni Okeh. Autorem był Hambone Willie Newbern a utwór miał tym razem nazwę Roll and Tumble Blues.
Bluesa tego nagrał również w 1936 roku w San Antonio Robert Johnson. Johnson napisał całkiem nowy tekst, co widać po tytule: If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day. Tę propozycję nagrał w 2004 roku Eric Clapton. Johnson nagrał tego bluesa jeszcze raz z innym tekstem, tym razem pod nazwą Travelling Riverside Blues.
W 1938 roku kolejne nagranie było dziełem Sonny Boy Williamsona - Lord Oh Lord Blues.
John Lee Hooker skorzystał z Newberna śpiewając Rollin' Blues.
Większą sławę uzyskał Muddy Waters, który dla Aristocrat, związanej z Chess Records, nagrał swoją interpretację, cechującą się wolniejszym tempem (1950). Muddy Waters wcześniej nagrał tego bluesa w konkurencyjnej wytwórni Parkway, z Litte Walterem. Leonard Chess, jak zwykle gdy widział szansę na dużą sprzedaż działał skutecznie. Późniejsze nagranie Watersa z Big Crawfordem na basie, zdominowało rynek, eliminując konkurenta. Tytuł Watersa Rolling and Tumbling stał się szeroko znany. Muddy Waters użył melodii również do Louisiana Blues.
W 1960 roku Elmore James nagrywając Rollin and Tumblin' przyznał sobie również autorstwo. U Jamesa było to dosyć częste. Każdy utwór, którego autor nie był mu znany uważał za swój.
Od 1960 roku Rollin and Tumblin był nagrywany setki razy przez grupy bluesowe, w tym bardzo znane, jak np.: Cream (1966) na albumie Fresh Carem, Johnny Winter (1968), Cannes Heat (1967), japońska grupa Blues Creation (1969), Eric Clapton (1992) unplugged, Jeff Beck (2000) na albumie You Had It Coming oraz Bob Dylan (2006) na albumie Modern Times. Dylan uważał się za autora tego bluesa, jakże by nie. Twierdził, że jego tekst jest najlepszy ze wszystkich.
W 1966 roku Yardbirds nagrali wersję pod tytułem Drinking Muddy Water, Grateful Dead - New, New Minglewood Blues (1967), Fleetwood Mac (1967) jako Rambling Pony, Howlin Wolf (1968) jako New Minglewood Blues, Lonnie Pitchford (1994) jako If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day, Doug MacLeod (1994) , Asylum Street Spankers (1996) i Rory Block podobnie.
W 1975 roku Johnny Shines nagrał wersję „więzienną” pod nazwą Red Sun. Zostawił tylko początek tekstu: "I rolled and I tumbled, I cried the whole night long."
Rollin and Tumblin to prosty rytmiczny blues, z silnymi uderzeniami perkusji, gitarą grającą techniką slide, organkami oraz wokalem. Oczywiście posiada typową 12. taktową strukturę.
Nowsze wersje mają już inną instrumentację. Obecnie mało kto gra w tradycyjnym bluesowym składzie.
W music boxie Gus Cannon’s Jug Stompers (nagranie z 1928 roku), Eric Clapton, Elmore James, Gone Daddy Grunge, David Gogo (nagranie najmłodsze) oraz R.L. Burnside. Nie umiem określić czemu, ale wersja Burnside’a wydaje mi się być najbardziej zbliżona do tych sprzed wieku.
