Polański ma przyjaciół. Wielu przyjaciół. Rolą przyjaciół, jeśli warci są tego miana, jest stawać w naszej obronie. Prawdę powiedziawszy, jeśli w niej nie staną, to mamy prawo kwestionować prawdziwość ich przyjaźni. To właśnie w biedzie poznajemy, kto jest, a kto nie jest naszym przyjacielem.
Szwajcaria, pomimo znacznej presjii Stanów Zjednoczonych, ostatecznie odmówiła ekstradycji Romana Polańskiego do USA. Zajęło im to wiele miesięcy, ale w końcu znaleźli pretekst prawny, by wykonać ten przyjazny gest w stosunku do znanego i cenionego reżysera. Decyzję, podjętą w trybie administracyjnym, uzasadniono argumentem prawnym, w rodzaju, który tylko najbardziej naiwni mogą uznać, za coś więcej niż kruczek prawny. Krótko mówiąc, nie chcieli to nie wydali.
Bezpośredniego ryzyka, że oswobodzony reżyser powróci do atakowania nieletnich panien, nie widzę. To chyba jeden z tych wyjątków potwierdzających regułę o niereformowalności pedofilów. Jeśli moje poczucie przyzwoitości wzdraga się przed entuzjastyczną akceptacją tego rezultatu, to raczej tylko dlatego, że oczyma wyobraźni widzę niejednego zboczeńca, usprawiedliwiającego własny brak chęci jakiejkolwiek poprawy, "bezkarnością" Polańskiego. Po ludzku cieszę się, że przyjaźń zadziałała dla uwięzionego Polańskiego.
Albo Uri Brodski ma niewielu przyjąciół, albo Polska jest znacznie mniej odważna w okazywaniu swoich przyjaźni, od Szwajcarii. A może ma mniej swobody w ich okazywaniu? W końcu członkowstwo w Unii niesie ze sobą swoje zobowiązania. Jednak, tak zwyczajnie po ludzku, smuci mnie, że tracąc okazję do podkreślenia własnej suwerenności w Europie Ojczyzn, nie udzieliliśmy pomocy w dobrej sprawie sojusznikowi. Przyjaciół bowiem nie tylko poznaje się w biedzie, w takich momentach się również ich zaskarbia.
Director Polanski has some friends! And lots of them. As we know, it is a job of a true friend to lend us a hand when we are in trouble. In fact we are right to question his/her commitment to us, if they fail to act on our behalf.
In spite of substantial pressures on her, Switzerland, announced her decision to refuse US Justice Department's request to have Polanski extradited to California, today. Yeah, it may have taken them several months, but they did finally find a way to do famous director a favor. Extrajudicial decision, made by Swiss Ministry of Justice, is based on technicalities. Only the most naive among us, will see in it anything but a clever ploy on loopholes. In short: they didn't want to extradite, so they didn't.
If there is anything which prevents me from enthusiastic endorsement of this decision, it is a vision of scores of pedophiles down the road, using example of Polanski's case to justify their charge of double standards. But I don't see any substantial risk of Polanski's return to his old, bad ways. I think his, is one of those rare exemptions, from a common believe that you can not change a pedophile. So it made me glad, to see that numerous friendships did work for Mr Polanski.
Uri Brodski, on the other hand, either has no friends, or Poland is less courageous to act on her friendships, then Switzerland is on hers. Or, perhaps, Poland has far less freedom to manifest her sympathies then Switzerland? After all, EU membership does oblige... It made me sad to see that, while losing excellent opportunity to underscore her independence , and sovereignty in the European community, Poland also missed her chance to lend a hand of support to an ally at the time of dire need, for a worthy cause. And remember, you don't only find who is your real friend in those tough times, but you also endear them to yourself, when your help is rendered when it is neither easy nor popular.
