Anne Applebaum noticed recently that the international press struggles to describe Norbert Hofer of Social Homeland Party, the guy who has just lost his bid to become the next Austrian president. So, she decided to unriddle the phenomenon of “far right political revolution” in Europe for her fellow Americans.
Wanting to cry wolf with all her heart, but knowing that she can do it only so many times before it stops working, she came up with the cute idea of calling the emerging movements seeking greater degree of independence from, overwhelming at times, central government of EU, a “national socialism”. If all she wanted, was to shake up Washington a little bit, that name would be quite enough. But Anne went farther, much farther, and lumped in the same category, Polish Law and Justice party, French National Party of Marine Le Pen, Hungary’s ruling party of Victor Orban, suggesting that they all are seeking the same thing… Why did she do it? Doesn't she know that there is not much in common between Jarosław Kaczyński, and Marine Le Pen, or Norbert Hofer? Sure she does.
But it doesn’t mater, because, you see, all she really wanted, was to cast a shadow of disgust, and suspicion on the Polish Law and Justice party. Party which has won the popular election in Poland, putting her husband, Radek Sikorski, out of the job, as the Polish FM. Her anger with Jaroslaw Kaczyński for wining the elections, is perhaps understandable, but smearing a whole country by spreading unjustified rumors, is as easy, as it is repulsive. Lashon hara.
Her glaring lack of objectivity in this matter, explains why she failed to report to her readers in the USA, that the real reason for the near victory of Norbert Hofer in Austria, is the intense, instinctive defense mechanism, triggered in her people, by insane immigration policy, Germany is pushing on all EU members.
Look, Germany is once again pushing European countries around. Empress Merkel knows better then the Austrians, Hungarians, French, Poles, and others, what is good for them. It really comes down to the old question, what is the country? The People, or the king? Anne Applebaum’s take on it, got to be somewhat unpopular in the USA, where the Constitution starts with the beautiful to all freedom loving folks words, We The People…
But the reason for Poles wanting their banks to be to a larger degree the Polish banks, for wanting their press to be free, and independent, and not in the hands of foreign owners, is a very different one. We want it in order to be able to pursue our happiness, we want it because we want to be secure in our homes, and free to defend our way of life. And Ann should get it, since she grew up in the free, and wonderful country, where most banks are American banks, most TV stations are in American hands, and most press is as well, an American press, and where politicians are hard at work for the good of American People.
There is a good reason behind election loss of Anne Appelbaum husband’s party, the PO. We the People didn’t want him, or his fellow apparatchiks in the office anymore. Because they didn’t do a good job for us. So, we voted them out. Now I understand, we perhaps should have apologize to Anne Appelbaum for the daring. But it is called democracy, and independence, baby, and too many Poles died fighting for it, to surrender our rights now, even to a man who posses his own zip code.
Here in Poland, we have a saying, “The full will never understand the hungry”. And for that reason as well, Anne can’t be a good advocate for still hungry for freedom peoples of Eastern Europe. And she shouldn’t try to explain today’s Europe to American people - she can’t even distinguish between people who have a history of oppressing other nations, and those oppressed by them. She lumps them all together in one rebellious bunch wanting a “national socialism” revolution.
