W dniu 8 czerwca br. otrzymałem od Skype'a następującą wiadomość:
We’ve noticed that you are, or previously were, using an older version of Skype that will be permanently retired. As a result, after July 1, 2017, you will no longer be able to sign in to these older versions of Skype. Recently updated or started using Skype on another device? Great, you can ignore this email.
To keep talking with your family and friends, please update Skype to the latest version. It only takes a few minutes and all your contacts and conversations will be right there when you sign in.
If you are unable to update, check our support siteto see if Skype still supports your device and operating system. If it is no longer supported, you can still stay in touch with friends and family using Skype on other devices. The latest versions of Skype for all supported devices are available at https://www.skype.com/download. You can sign in using the same Skype account.
Właścicielem komunikatora internetowego Skype jest bodaj od 2011 roku niejaka Microsoft Co, amerykańska firma z siedzibą w Redmond.
Problem w tym, że mój Skype na starym netbooku is already updated to the latest version, bo nowszej od 2014 roku nie ma. Owszem, wydano nową wersję Skype'a (beta!) na komputery 64 bitowe, ale nie umiem zmienić architektury starego netbooka z 32 bitowej na 64 bitową. Zresztą, tego chyba nikt nie umie.
Takich problemów nie mają ani użytkownicy systemu Windows, ani Mac OS X.
Nadal jest możliwość korzystania ze Skype'a na starych 32 bitowych maszynach za pomocą dodatku „Skype for web”a w przeglądarkach google chrome i chromium. Można zainstalować takie rozszerzenie i w Operze, ale przynajmniej w moim netbooku to rozszerzenie nie działa.
Nie wiem, jak jest w przypadku firefoxa, sam dodatek „Skype web” istnieje, ale nie sprawdzałem czy i jak działa, oraz czy jest dostępny dla komputerów 32 bitowych.
Korzystanie z przestarzałego Skype 4.3 było o tyle przyjemne, że miał on prosty, przyjazny interfejs i nie był skażony żadnymi reklamami. Rzadko korzystam z wersji Skype'a (aktualnej) dla Windows i zawsze mnie drażni ogrom reklam.
Nawet darmowego antywirusa avast! Nie da się normalnie używać, bo co trochę reklama zachęca do wykupienia wersji płatnej, która oczywiście jest „przez limited time for a special price”.
Dla Skype'a w zasadzie nie ma sensownej konkurencji, bo jakkolwiek istnieją inne, wieloplatformowe komunikatory internetowe, to trudno np. członka rodziny przekonać, by zaczął go używać zamiast Skype'a…
