The rule of law game between Hungary and the European Union

“Democracy has died in Hungary”, “The rule of law is in danger in Poland”, “The EU should act against democratic backsliding in member states” – these headlines come up more and more often in Western European media. They are also hot topics the European institutions and several NGOs like to deal with.

The presentation proposed by Akos Bence GAT, a Hungarian student graduated from prestigious French universities such as Sciences Po Paris, Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne University and ENA, helps to better understand the reasons behind this phenomenon. Taking the relationship of Hungary and the EU as a case study, the expert analyzes the recent rise of the European rule of law policy.

What are the hidden political interests behind the rule of law game? When and how the protection of rule of law in EU member states has been fixed to the European political agenda as a problem to be resolved? What are the key moments of the development of this new policy? Who are the actors for and against the new policy, and around which coalitions do they organize themselves? What are the main communication narratives that the coalitions use to convince citizens? What does the rule of law debate reveal about the EU’s more general political divisions? – The presentation tries to answer all these questions.
