W przemówieniu wygłoszonym wczoraj podczas jednej z ostatnich miesięcznic smoleńskich Prezes Jarosław Kaczyński powiedział do uczestników uroczystości:
„….Możemy wszyscy powiedzieć sobie nawzajem, że zrobiliśmy coś, co jest bardzo, bardzo ważne dla ojczyny, dla Polski, dla naszej niepodległości, dla naszej godności…”
i nawiązał do aktualnej sytuacji,
„…Dziś jest właśnie czas, w którym tej godności trzeba bronić i to też trzeba pamiętać…”
a później wypowiedział bardzo ważne słowa:
„Dziś wrogowie Polski, można powiedzieć, że dzisiaj diabeł podpowiada nam pewną bardzo niedobrą receptę, pewną ciężką chorobę duszy, chorobę umysłu - tą chorobą jest antysemityzm. Musimy go odrzucać, zdecydowanie odrzucać.”
Ważne słowa, bo skierowane do Polaków, aby nie dali się sprowokować, ale jednocześnie także słowa, które powinni usłyszeć Żydzi, jako sygnał ostrzegający przed takim rozwojem sytuacji, w którym trudno będzie komukolwiek zapanować nad skutkami rodzącej się do nich niechęci.
Kaczyński nie powiedział o rzekomym, lub prawdziwym antysemityzmie Polaków, ale o tym, który nam zagraża, który podpowiadają wrogowie Polski i współpracujący z nimi diabeł. W tej współczesnej sytuacji jak wrogowie Polski zachowali się ważni przedstawiciele państwa Izrael - ambasador, premier i ministrowie, a wsparte to zostało przez wielu innych wypowiadających się i demonstrujących Żydów. Choć pojawiły się też głosy innych nieprzyjaznych Polsce ludzi, główny atak dostrzegany przez Polaków obejmuje agresywnych Żydów, którzy wręcz prowokują do utrwalania negatywnych stereotypów tworzonych w Polsce przez nich samych od wielu lat. Mamy przecież permanentny seans nienawiści do Polaków, w którym uczestniczą od wielu lat Żydzi podkreślający chętnie swoją identyfikację publicznie. To z pewnością są wrogowie Polski, którym zależy na budzeniu wśród Polaków antysemityzmu. Jeśli słuchamy i czytamy raniące Polaków wypowiedzi i oskarżenia Geberta, Grossa, Blumsztajna, Morozowskiego, żydowskich dziennikarzy zespołu Gazety Wyborczej, żydowskich historyków i wielu innych polskich Żydów, a z wielką trudnością wyławiamy słabo słyszalne głosy pojedynczych Żydów, którzy im się sprzeciwiają, to trzeba mieć niezwykłą odporność, by nie poddać się uogólnieniu, że oni wszyscy są tacy. Właśnie uogólnienia, które są naturalną skłonnością każdego człowieka, mogą prowadzić do rodzenia się niechęci do innych narodów, do mniejszości narodowych, lub wszelkich innych wspólnot. W przypadku Żydów można się oprzeć takim skutkom, przywołując z pamięci bliskie nam przykłady Hemara, Rubinsteina, Brandstaettera, Żydów leżących na cmentarzach w Katyniu, pod Monte Cassino, wreszcie własnych dobrych znajomych, często przyjaciół, a zwłaszcza takich, którzy dzisiaj bronią Polski, tak jak czyni to Aszkenazy. W większości Polacy nawet nie potrzebują takich odwołań, bo wiara chrześcijańska nakazuje wręcz traktowanie każdego, jako odrębnego, pojedynczego człowieka, któremu należy się szacunek i godność. Nie można jednak założyć, że nie ma innych Polaków, których odporność nie jest tak silna, łatwiej ulegają stereotypom i nie zadają sobie trudu głębszych przemyśleń, gdy stają wobec tak potwornej i niesprawiedliwej agresji.
Kłamcy i manipulatorzy, którzy chcą sterować zachowaniem Polaków, by dla własnych celów wzbudzać antysemityzm, doskonale wiedzą, że właśnie godność jest tą wartością, w którą należy uderzyć, a jeśli takiemu uderzeniu towarzyszy bezsilność, łatwo wywołać eksplozję gniewu. Jestem pełen uznania dla mojego narodu, że wciąż opiera się tym wyzwaniom, zwłaszcza dla pokolenia, które przeżyło najtrudniejsze czasy w polskiej historii i także upokorzenia znosiły cierpliwie przez wiele lat. Dzisiaj już sytuacja się nie odwróci, ale jest też najwyższy czas, by wrogowie Polski we własnym interesie zrozumieli, że tak jest i zaprzestali prowokacji. Prowokują od bardzo dawna i od dawna trwa walka o naszą narodową godność. Była to walka toczona w wielu miejscach przez wielu Polaków, ale zwykle całkiem indywidualnie i samotnie, mimo niesamowitej bezsilności. Dopiero dzisiaj ta walka staje się powszechna i głęboko wierzę, że przyniesie zwycięstwo.
Przytoczę, jako przykład takiej walki, swoją własną przygodę z 1983 roku, gdy starłem się z takim przejawem pozbawiania Polski godności przez Żydów w USA. Chodziło o amerykański serial „Winds of War” produkowany i promowany przez stację telewizyjną ABC i tygodnik Time. Promocja była niesamowita i bardzo skuteczna - po emisji oceniono, że serial był oglądany przez ponad 100-milionową widownię. Miał to być pierwszy amerykański film pokazujący, że II w.ś. rozpoczęła się we wrześniu 1939, a nie dopiero w grudniu 1941 po ataku na Pearl Harbor. Byłem bardzo zainteresowany tym, w jaki sposób przedstawią polski etap wojny. Dwa pierwsze odcinki, które tego dotyczyły, wbiły mnie w fotel i napisałem tekst, który w proteście wysłałem do obu instytucji promujących film. Tekst przesłałem także w charakterze informacji do redakcji Nowego Dziennika w Nowym Jorku i był on później opublikowany w kwartalniku New Horizon – Polish American Review – September/October/November 1983. Otrzymałem odpowiedzi – w miarę kulturalną od redakcji Time („dziękujemy za uwagi, staramy się brać pod uwagę opinie różnych mniejszości i liczymy na dalszą współpracę..”) i brutalną z telewizji ABC („…wyraził Pan swoją opinię, my mamy inną, pozostańmy przy swoich opiniach…). Potem już tylko czułem rosnącą bezsilność patrząc na wiele innych podobnych zjawisk związanych z tymi samymi środowiskami.
Film „Winds of War” był pokazywany znacznie później w polskiej telewizji, ale ja nie miałem możliwości go obejrzeć. Przypuszczam, że polska wersja była odpowiednio przycięta, bo nie słyszałem o jakichś większych protestach z nim związanych. Był to jednak czas, gdy Internetu jeszcze nie było i przy całkowitym monopolu mediów, protesty mogły nie być słyszane.
Zamieszczam wspomniany tekst, jako dokument tamtej, beznadziejnej walki o godność. Tłumaczyć na język polski mi się po prostu nie chce.
WHY?
A powerful storm rolled through mass media announcing the great event, before the „Winds of War” started to blow day by day from the TV screen. The reaction around me convinced me that I am not the only one who is disappointed and bored. However, not everybody became angry, and I did. I leave to experts to explain professionally the reason for disappointment, as for my anger, probably nobody in this country will do it for me.
As advertised the serial tells the story about an American family with intense background of reconstructed events from the first phase of the second world war. However, it is quite transparent already from the first episode, that the emphasis is put on the war time tragedy of the Jewish population. It is then next, after “Holocaust”, long serial made for everybody to remember the drama and sufferings of Jewish people in the nazi controlled part of the world. I strongly feel and believe that indeed there is a permanent need of preventing these tragic events from being forgotten, although the context of recent Middle East events makes impression of not very fortunate timing of this message. The thing which made me angry, which I do not understand and I ask: WHY? – are the anti-Polish accents in both serials.
I would not blame any individual expressing such views, because I could assume they are based on someone bad experience from the past. However, when it happens for the second time in a highly publicized movie, emitted in the TV prime time, and aimed to more than half of the US population, I take it as nothing but purposely arranged propaganda against the Polish nation and I ask myself: WHY?
The method of propaganda resembles very much the one I am used to from my home country – Poland, with two main elements of it: lies and not the whole truth. In “Holocaust”, although a lot of action takes place in Poland, the Poles are shown only as colaborationg with Nazis – helping to load the transport of Jews to the concentration camp or executing them in the Warsaw ghetto – which in reality was the same rarity as, shown there, the group of Jewish partisans organized in the forest to fight with Germans. In the “Winds of War” the authors, I believe by purpose, avoided to show the, probably most heroic part of that period of World War II, the Polish resistance against German invasion in September 1939. Once again the truth was not told about the nation, who betrayed by the allies fought to the last drop of blood, until attacked from the east side had no chance to resist, but never capitulated building the underground resistance inside Poland and fighting in almost all parts of the world during the whole war time. Instead, one does sea Polish soldiers in Warsaw, running in uncoordinated way, sharing their time between lunch and hopeless shooting at invaders. The squadron of Polish cavalry against the powerful Luftwaffe planes restores again the false myth on romantic and hopeless fight of Poles in 1939, neglecting completely e.g. the statistics of German losses from that time. Then we see two creatures in Polish army uniforms who molest a Jewish family trying to confiscate their car. The Polish army officer is brutal, careless, showing some respect to the American citizen, but pouring coffee at his passport. This falsification is almost an offense because it is widely known that the officers of the Polish army at that time, were the top quality, highly educated people, who were admired by the whole nation and this admiration survived until today, in spite of recent events in Poland.
Is this impression smoothened by Jastrow, who says: “there are good Poles and bad Poles…”. So maybe fifty-fifty? Or is it enhanced by the episode, where Himmler communicates to Hitler, that SS is joined by many volunteers from Poland and Tchekchoslovakia? Even if I am probably more sensitive to these aspects of the “Winds of War”, than most of the viewers, the message is clearly aimed to those who do not know much of that time history, and who do not care to find for themselves the truth. I am afraid there are many people in the U.S. who again learn that only the Jewish population suffered during the war, the Polish resistance was meaningless, and Poles were indifferent, if not cooperative with Germans. Such falsification is a great injustice to the whole Polish nation, but in particular to all those who fought, and those who risked their lives saving many Jewish families from tragedy. Especially when this injustice comes now, in time when there is no representation of the Polish nation with whom the majority of people identify themselves and who could protest loud enough to be heard.
Some truth about Poland’s history and today’s reality started to break through to the world in recent years, now again Poland is silent and forgotten and the “Winds of War” emission is the first action in the outside world trying to restore old, false impressions of that country, and I ask again: WHY?
Rejecting many speculations I can think about only one possible motivation of the authors of both serials. They simply do not care for Poles or anybody else, they do not care for truth, they want to show the Jewish tragedy as dramatic a way as possible, trying to gain further, recently shaken support for Israel in the U.S. population. Maybe this goal will be achieved, maybe the support will be regained, but at the same time I am quite sure it does work in the opposite way in other parts of the world. This policy is shortsighted and works against the hopes of almost everybody to change the world introducing more of the understanding between different nations.
I cannot blame anybody else but producers and those who promoted both serials. Nevertheless, I am not sure whether all of my compatriots will avoid making generalizations, but I am almost certain that the few anti-Semites in Poland got a new argument into their hands. It is my deep conviction that for most of the Jews the worlds interest is not far from their own interest and they do not support the primitive approach displayed in the serial. But the bitter taste may be removed only if their protest reaches comparatively broad public. On the other hand, I hardly can imagine that anybody of those who were saved by Poles in tragic circumstances of the Nazi time, could be silent after watching the “Winds of War”. The author and producers of the movie should stick to writing books and articles expressing their private views if they do not sense a grave responsibility using the TV for shaping opinions of many millions of people.
I am looking very much forward to the time when someone makes a true movie on the second world war. It would also be interesting to see a movie showing e.g the story of Jews who through centuries being expelled from many countries found their home country in Poland.
