Formal Complaint Regarding Undermining Democratic Elections in Poland by ruling party Platform of Civic Coalition (PO)

Dear European Commission,

I am writing to formally express my deep concern regarding the ongoing actions by politicians of the ruling Platform of Civic Coalition (PO) and the government of Poland, which appear to undermine the principles of democratic elections and threaten the stability of democracy in Poland.

The recent OSCE report on the presidential elections in Poland highlights several troubling issues. It states that the government failed to adequately defend electoral equality, foreign entities financed promotional campaigns supporting the government candidate Rafał Trzaskowski in violation of legal standards, and that public television “TVP” and “TVP Info” served as a propaganda tool for the ruling party. These findings raise serious questions about the fairness and integrity of the electoral process.

Furthermore, instead of addressing and clarifying these issues, politicians from the Platform of Civic Coalition (PO) (like Roman Giertych , Michał Szczerba and many more) and the government have launched a campaign accusing the opposition of electoral fraud. Such actions are characteristic of non-democratic regimes, reminiscent of tactics used in Belarus, Russia, Zimbabwe, and Venezuela, where false accusations are employed to delegitimize election results and suppress political opposition.

This behavior undermines the fundamental principles of democracy, erodes public trust, and risks inciting social unrest. The Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, while not directly participating in the accusations, has failed to take appropriate steps to restore order and uphold democratic standards. Allowing or neglecting to prevent such public undermining of election results is unacceptable and contrary to the values that the European Union promotes.

In light of the above, and considering the importance of safeguarding democratic processes, I kindly request the European Commission to issue an official statement to the Polish government emphasizing its obligation to accept and respect election outcomes. Any attempts to discredit democratic elections, especially through false accusations, are characteristic of authoritarian regimes and must be condemned.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I trust that the European Union will take appropriate action to uphold democracy and ensure that electoral integrity is preserved in Poland.

Sincerely,

Maciej Slusarczyk
