Romer

Romer, Polish Oscar Schiendler, was in the past a personal secretary of Roman Dmowski and the secretary of the Polish legation during the Versailles conference. In the years 1937-1941, he was the ambassador of the government of the Second Polish Republic in Japan.

Romer begins to manage the rescue of Polish refugees, who from the first days of August 1940 arrived to Japan by Vladivostok more than two thousand, including 97% of the Jews, mostly from the Vilnius and Kaunas neighborhoods. Polish embassy staff are falling for him and he is obliged to try to find them asylum during the war. He meets every major party of refugees arriving from Vladivostok at Tsuruga's arrival port. Facilitates the completion of entry formalities, issues new passports, intervenes with the Japanese authorities on the extension of stay and directs Jews to nearby Kobe, where refugees place in 27 hired for this purpose houses and in Yokohama and Tokyo.

In September and October 1941, due to Japan's break in diplomatic relations with the Polish government and the liquidation of the Polish embassy in Tokyo, the Japanese authorities transported all refugees remaining in Japan to Shanghai. Ambassador Tadeusz Romer with his family, embassy staff, and 946 people, mostly teachers and students of rabbinical schools, including 320 from jerzoty in Mir, came to China. The suspension of ship connections and the subsequent outbreak (December 7, 1941) of the Pacific War have thwarted Ambassador Romer's efforts to deploy all remaining refugees in countries not covered by military operations thanks to the new visa contingents acquired.

 The rest of the students and rabbis from Mira in September 1941 found themselves in the port of Jaffa, thus landing in Palestine. They built the new yeshiva in Jerusalem and simply called Mir. Founded in 1817 by Rabbi Samuel Tiktinski, the school from the town of Mir, on Polish soil, now found its place in Jerusalem and New York. At the end of 1941, all Jews who had stayed in the town of Mir about 1500 people, including students from a religious school who did not manage to escape, were murdered by the Nazis.
