You seem do miss the message of Scott Peck book, so you repeat a question "why we aren’t seeing greater and more persistent resistance to the “People of the Lie” without proper answer.
The Lie is a landmark of satanic "way of being". In order to perpetrate evil one need to lie, which means one need to create his own world that is divorced from reality and in this world a person which brings harm to others is perfectly justified.
The thing is - evil is not zero-one thing. It's a continuum, it's wide like slow tsunami and... it is in all of us. In you, in me, in others to some degree. No one is free from evil, but we are on different stages. Some crossed the point of no return, but it didn't mean we're good. We are to fight evil in us, basically through focus on goodness, love and truth. But can we do it? Without some help. Is God - which may help us - real?
So the answer is, we all succumb to GREED to some extend. GREED means desire for control. LOVE means desire for freedom, growth, wellbeing for others. GREED wants it cause it's empty, it's a maelstrom. LOVE wants something else cause it's a source. When you resonate with GREED you're alone, so you need to subdue something, someone else (everything and everyone?) to fulfill your essence - which is endless process called hell. When you resonate with LOVE you're in communion, you're full, so you share that fullness.
It's not that there are good masses and evil elites. It's a fairy tale which is to some extend nice and convenient to masses, allow them to feel good about themselves. Erase these elites and - I am convinced - you will see the same elites in one generation, cause in fact elites and masses shares the same attitude.
We need to start from the beginning. We need to answer to ourselves: "Is ultimate source of life, existence, love?" "Is IT real?" "Can we interact with IT"? "What's our role in life?" "How about of our death?"
If we choose IT, which in religious language is described as God, that it's a start. Then there's a hard "pilgrimage" on the road to Him, to IT. On that road we are to be transformed, changed in a way that can't be predicted. Then and maybe only then we will become conscious of reality, of our own condition, of hope that cannot be denied, of happiness that doesn't come from us or from the world but which emanates through us and through world.
Situation is good, if God exists. It's a chance and task, to see reality as it is, to turn ourselves towards God even if direct experiences seem to be inconvenient on many levels. Then elites will change or will be replaced. I know the next question: "When?". Don't be greedy. God acts in every nanosecond of reality existence. We... have work to do, pilgrimage to make.
